Running a Blog is Hard Work

blogI used to think that having a blog would be something I could play with as I learned more about developing sites and driving traffic. When I had MTOD launched previously, I found that I needed to post at least once a day in order to keep my visitors coming back and increase my page ranking. While this is still very true, I’ve found over the past couple of years that there is so much more involved with having a blog – or any kind of website. I guess I could just jump on everyday and do exactly what the title of this site implies, provide my thought of the day and carry on. I do that, sort of. MTOD is a WordPress site that I haven’t taken the time to really customize. I happened to stumble across this theme while looking for a theme for another project and wound up registering this domain just so I could have an excuse to use the theme.

When I write a post I don’t hesitate to share my opinion on whatever the topic is. In my most recent post, I told of how I use dvd’s to provide the background noise I need in order to work. Do people really care about that? I dunno. Although I enjoy sharing my thoughts and opinions, one of the biggest purposes of this site is to drive traffic to my other sites. I have several other projects that I’m currently working on and if I have traffic to my blog I increase the chances of driving traffic to one of my other sites because their links are listed in the left column.     The biggest benefit of working with a WordPress blog is it gives me a chance to see what elements users might require and then be able to develop a blogging site without some of the overhead of WordPress. WordPress is a great product. Please don’t get me wrong about that. Unfortunately it’s not always the easiest to customize. My preference for this site would be to have 3-4 columns and I don’t like the way WordPress structures the site “pages”. One day I will have time to go through their template tutorials and figure out how to customize this design easier for this WordPress framework.

Since I’ve upgraded my version of Firefox to 3.5.3, I don’t have access to my Google toolbar which provided page rank info, so I don’t currently know where any of my sites are ranking. That’s ok though. I can still continue to add my sites into my Google Web Analytics and find my rankings there and learn from what keywords are being used in the searches that bring people to my sites. I can still continue to offer my two cents ever couple of days about various topics that people may or may not be interested in.

I have Twitter, Facebook and MySpace accounts and you might actually catch me updating my status on those sites. Hopefully, between all of this, enough traffic can be driven to my other sites where I’m hoping to generate some income.

Or find a job…
