My Thought of the Day

Running a Blog is Hard Work

September 19th, 2009 by Bern

blogI used to think that having a blog would be something I could play with as I learned more about developing sites and driving traffic. When I had MTOD launched previously, I found that I needed to post at least once a day in order to keep my visitors coming back and increase my page ranking. While this is still very true, I’ve found over the past couple of years that there is so much more involved with having a blog – or any kind of website. I guess I could just jump on everyday and do exactly what the title of this site implies, provide my thought of the day and carry on. I do that, sort of. MTOD is a WordPress site that I haven’t taken the time to really customize. I happened to stumble across this theme while looking for a theme for another project and wound up registering this domain just so I could have an excuse to use the theme.

When I write a post I don’t hesitate to share my opinion on whatever the topic is. In my most recent post, I told of how I use dvd’s to provide the background noise I need in order to work. Do people really care about that? I dunno. Although I enjoy sharing my thoughts and opinions, one of the biggest purposes of this site is to drive traffic to my other sites. I have several other projects that I’m currently working on and if I have traffic to my blog I increase the chances of driving traffic to one of my other sites because their links are listed in the left column.     Read the rest of this entry »

Great DVD’s to Work By

September 16th, 2009 by Bern

Animal HouseIt’s funny. I’m the kind of web designer/developer that has to have some kind of background noise going when I’m in front of my computer. When I had my house I had a whole den with my computer, recliner and tv. The recliner is deadly though. Just one look and you’re snoring. But having the tv on while I was working was enough. Except of course for commercials. They just annoy the piss out of me.

But, now I’m in an apartment and the 3rd bedroom that I’m using for my “office” isn’t really big enough for all the stuff I used to have in my den. And that’s quite alright. I’ve found that I love listening to dvd’s while I’m working. I actually have 2 monitors connected to my computer. I use my 22″ while working and play dvd’s on a dinky 15″. The smaller monitor is over in the corner, where I can still see it, but it’s not a distraction. When I need a distraction, I actually just sit back in my chair and watch the dvd for a few minutes. As I said, the purpose of the dvd isn’t for watching: it’s to listen to. I’ve seen most of them so many times I can pretty much recite them line by line. The best part about them is I can rip them to my computer and then create playlists which means no commercials.     Read the rest of this entry »

Kanye West Strikes Again

September 15th, 2009 by Bern

kanye-taylorI am not at all up on today’s music. I’m sorry to say I’m stuck on the 80’s and haven’t even made an attempt to learn any of the new stuff. I do know that Kanye has been around for awhile and I know that Taylor Swift is a very popular artist. I may not know their music, but I’m not immune to Perez Hilton or TMZ who report on them regularly.

I’ve seen and or heard artists make bad speeches for awards they’ve won. I’ve even heard of actors refusing an Oscar because he didn’t believe in them. I’ve never heard of an artist winning an award, and ANOTHER artist jump on stage and bash the winner. Whether or not Taylor Swift deserved to win her award is really kind of irrelevant. Kanye West had no business jumping on stage, taking the mic out of Swift’s hand and then complain that Beyonce should have won the award for that category.     Read the rest of this entry »

R.I.P. Patrick Swayze

September 15th, 2009 by Bern

Patrick Swayze

“Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost” star, Patrick Swayze, 57, died on September 14, 2009 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. It was reported that his family was at his side when he died.

Despite being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer early in 2008, Patrick had a starring role as a veteran FBI agent on A & E’s “The Beast”. The series was cancelled after only one season, even though there was a story line in place to “kill off” Swayze’s character in the event the actor couldn’t continue with his role.

My favorite movie of his was “Red Dawn” with Charlie Sheen and C. Thomas Howell. I remember going to the movies with my friend Bridget while we were in highschool and how she cried at the end.

Thank you for all you’ve given us, Patrick. We will miss you.

Bucs Opening Day

September 15th, 2009 by Bern

Tampa Bay BuccaneersSo the much-anticipated 2009 season started for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers yesterday…and I was there with my friend Mike.

Being the good fan that I am, I love my Bucs win or lose. Given the price of tickets at Raymond James Stadium it would have to take quite a bit more than my team losing to make me leave early. Unfortunately, we left during the 3rd quarter. The temperature in the stands was just unbearable. I think it was only in the 80’s, but the sun was blasting and the humidity was quite oppressive. I made through most of the 2nd quarter and then I had to go down to the concourse. I was hot and dizzy and I definitely didn’t want to be one of those people that know when they’re not feeling well and insist on pushing it until they collapse. Mike came down at half-time and we decided that it was just too hot and neither of us wanted to wind up getting sick so we left.     Read the rest of this entry »
