Advertising on Craigslist

November 15th, 2009 by Bern

Craigslist AdBack in October I’d made a post that Craigslist has become a waste for me to look for a regular job. However, it does still provide a reasonable venue for advertising services. Well, sort of.

Craigslist has finally started cracking down on spammers and over-posters, meaning that one used to be able to post an ad on Monday at 8am, make another post at noon, and then maybe another post at 5pm, and continue the same process every day of the week. Posters do that to keep their ads on top of the list.

If you’re like me, you don’t like to scroll and then heaven forbid you should have to click a “Next” button! I can’t stand it! Unfortunately, the ad that I posted on Thursday is now on a second page. Not likely it’s going to be found down there. Craigslist’s crackdown now makes it virtually impossible to make multiple posts to the same category, or more than 3 posts on your account at all. Furthermore, when registering your account, you now have to verify that you’re a real person and that you’re not creating multiple accounts by verifying either via telephone or text on your cell. Once that phone number is in the system, you cannot activate more than one account with that phone number.     Read the rest of this entry »

Promoting A Website

October 3rd, 2009 by Bern

seoSo everyone wants to know what the quickest and easiest way is to get their site a high ranking on Google, Yahoo and MSN. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is an extremely difficult science to master. I don’t know what the current stats are for sites being added to the web everyday, and there isn’t any consensus by internet reporting agencies about how many sites actually exist. I’ve read that Google has indexed in excess of 1.3 billion sites, but Google actually indexes pages, so who knows what 1.3 billion objects have been indexed. Even if we used only half of that number, the competition is tough.

In any event, people are under the misconception that if they launch a website, people will come. They have the latest and greatest product and everyone and their brother want to buy it. That may very well be true. Who’s going to tell these people about their product? How does anyone tell the public they have a product to sell? You might not even be selling something per se. You may have your own blog, a forum, or game or just about anything you can think of, that you want for people to know about.     Read the rest of this entry »

Running a Blog is Hard Work

September 19th, 2009 by Bern

blogI used to think that having a blog would be something I could play with as I learned more about developing sites and driving traffic. When I had MTOD launched previously, I found that I needed to post at least once a day in order to keep my visitors coming back and increase my page ranking. While this is still very true, I’ve found over the past couple of years that there is so much more involved with having a blog – or any kind of website. I guess I could just jump on everyday and do exactly what the title of this site implies, provide my thought of the day and carry on. I do that, sort of. MTOD is a WordPress site that I haven’t taken the time to really customize. I happened to stumble across this theme while looking for a theme for another project and wound up registering this domain just so I could have an excuse to use the theme.

When I write a post I don’t hesitate to share my opinion on whatever the topic is. In my most recent post, I told of how I use dvd’s to provide the background noise I need in order to work. Do people really care about that? I dunno. Although I enjoy sharing my thoughts and opinions, one of the biggest purposes of this site is to drive traffic to my other sites. I have several other projects that I’m currently working on and if I have traffic to my blog I increase the chances of driving traffic to one of my other sites because their links are listed in the left column.     Read the rest of this entry »

Great DVD’s to Work By

September 16th, 2009 by Bern

Animal HouseIt’s funny. I’m the kind of web designer/developer that has to have some kind of background noise going when I’m in front of my computer. When I had my house I had a whole den with my computer, recliner and tv. The recliner is deadly though. Just one look and you’re snoring. But having the tv on while I was working was enough. Except of course for commercials. They just annoy the piss out of me.

But, now I’m in an apartment and the 3rd bedroom that I’m using for my “office” isn’t really big enough for all the stuff I used to have in my den. And that’s quite alright. I’ve found that I love listening to dvd’s while I’m working. I actually have 2 monitors connected to my computer. I use my 22″ while working and play dvd’s on a dinky 15″. The smaller monitor is over in the corner, where I can still see it, but it’s not a distraction. When I need a distraction, I actually just sit back in my chair and watch the dvd for a few minutes. As I said, the purpose of the dvd isn’t for watching: it’s to listen to. I’ve seen most of them so many times I can pretty much recite them line by line. The best part about them is I can rip them to my computer and then create playlists which means no commercials.     Read the rest of this entry »
